    MBFWA17: Our Favourite Moments

With MBFWA done and dusted for another year, we take a look back at some of our favourite moments from the week that was…

Dion Lee

We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off MBFWA17 than with homegrown hero Dion Lee returning to our shores. With the sails of the Sydney Opera House serving as an apt backdrop, Lee showcased a seriously impressive collection filled with pops of colour, louche tailoring and his signature eye for sculptural detailing. The best part? His twenty-piece menswear capsule Dion Lee MAN - a first for the designer, but hopefully not his last.

Sass & Bide
After 14 years away, we welcomed Sass & Bide back to MBFWA with open arms. Resort 18 was an ode to the brand’s bohemian roots, with a decidedly modern feel. Think a luxe palette of black, white and metallics with pops of colour and heavy-handed embellishments that make even the most simple of silhouettes feel special.

Thomas Puttick

At just 23, Thomas Puttick is hard to ignore. His eponymous label debuted on Day 2 and was widely lauded as one of the most inclusive presentations we’ve ever seen. The designer called on his muses, rather than models, to take to the runway in his creations - between Dina Broadhurst (interior designer), Yvonne Tozzi (model mother), Amina Conteh-Biger (founder of the Aminata Foundation) and Federal MP Dr. Anne Aly, women of all codes and creeds were celebrated in equal measure.

Ellery
Paris-based Australian designer Kym Ellery made a surprise visit to our shores to celebrate a decade in the fashion industry. Instead of presenting a new collection, Ellery treated VIP guests to a retrospective installation showcasing some the label’s most iconic looks - statement silhouettes and exaggerated sleeves aplenty.

Romance Was Born

Design duo Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett transformed the main runway to close MBFWA the only way they know how - show-stopping silhouettes, glitter galore and tongue firmly in cheek. We couldn’t ask for anything more…
