The site of Canberra was selected for the location of Australia's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, country's two largest cities. Over 100 years later, Sydney is internationally known for amazing views and landmarks like Harbour Bridge and Opera House but Melbourne is taking the crown as cultural capital of Australia.
It does not matter if you are into Fashion, Art or Musical: you just have to choose, because seriously, a loooot is going on. Not even mentioning all the classic touristic stuff like Laneways and Rooftop Bars.
FASHION: DO NOT MISS "Viktor and Rolf: Fashion Artists" at NVG International until 26th February 2017. The exhibition features some of the most show-stopping and innovative works of the Dutch design duo exploring their notion of "wearable art". These include over 35 haute couture pieces from the designers collection, earlier archive designs and international museum collections. Does help you if I say it is the first exhibition in the world dedicated and curated by the visionary duo?
ART: "The Art of Banksy" at The Paddock until 22nd January 2017. Famous for his Graffiti stencilling technique, Banksy's artwork combines dark humour with underlying political messages and social themes, making him one of the biggest contemporary artist. The outdoor area will also host live DJ's on selected Friday nights and Saturday sessions.
MUSICAL: "The Book of Mormon" at Princess Theatre from 18th of January till 30th of March 2017. I was living in London when this musical from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone came to Prince of Wales theatre in Soho. Tickets were completely sold out for at least 6 months. My partner managed to snatch a couple of them (I still don't know how!) for my birthday. Let me tell you: it is absolutely brilliant! You can not miss that. It must be a reason if New York Times calls it "the best musical of this century".
