Created in 2008 by IMG in partnership with the NSW Government the Australian Laureate Awards honors those who have made significant contribution and outstanding achievement within the Australian Fashion industry.
This year presented by Etihad Airways is the 10th Anniversary of the Australian Laureate Awards. On a beautiful night in Sydney a majestic candlelight dining room awaited guests arriving at The Cutaway in Barangaroo. Margaret Zhang who is a classically trained pianist known to most of us as a Stylist, Director and Photographer welcomed everyone with an exquisite piece designed for her fashion film "There’s no space left in C# Minor" while highlights from her film played out behind her over two large screens.
Before the dinner commenced a runway retrospective show featured designs from the previous winners of the last 10 years including last year’s winner Toni Maticevski, Akira Isogawa, Easton Pearson, Jenny Kee, Collette Dinnigan and Carla Zampatti.
The prestigious award this year was rewarded to now, New York based Dion Lee. He was selected from a group of fashion heavyweights who included Edwina McCann the Editor for Vogue, Kym Ellery, Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett the designers for Romance Was Born and Nicholas Huxley of the Design Studio.
Dion Lee was also in the running for Best Australian Womenswear which was awarded to Zimmerman. Other categories and winners included, Jac +Jack for Best Australian Menswear, Dinosaur Designs for Best Australian Accessories, Harrolds for best Australian Retailer and for the Ethiad Airways Emerging Talent Award: P.E Nation was given the accolade.
In celebrating the awards the retrospective collection showcased at the awards night is being presented in a special exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (MAAS) also presented by IMG called Catalysts and Creators from 10 November to 11 March 2018.
Our Miro Door team were behind the scenes of this prestigious event assisting stylist Kelvin Harries and his team with the retrospective fashion show held during the evening. Watch out for upcoming articles highlighting Miro Door team members who have shared their experience in being part of the back of house support team for the 10th Australian Fashion Laureate.
