Fashion is constantly changing and therefore always looking for the next new thing. The International Woolmark Prize known as a high-profile competition worldwide provides designers to show off their work and recognises outstanding rising fashion labels. In which winners receive a sponsorship and their collection in the world’s most prestigious fashion retailers.
Held in the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Australian designer winner has been announced for womenswear for 2016, Bianca Spender. Known for her intelligent and intriguing concepts creating modern, feminine garments, her submission of a motorcycle jacket, worn over a matching blazer and pant set was a crowd favourite. Having people impressed by its simple and neutral tones but elegant finish. Spender will receive a $50,000 prize money, as well as the opportunity to represent Australia at the international finals, held in New York in February of next year.
Bianca’s inspiration for her entry came from the texture of land, scarred cracked earth. “I wanted to draw from the land, representing the texture of the land in the surface of the wool with quilting, slashing and pin stitching," she said.
“Wool is my favourite fabric, it inspires me to create unique forms. From sharp tailoring to organic draping it has an incredible integrity as a fibre and holds shape at the same time that it moulds into the body.”
Post winning announcement, Spender was planning to return to her office and celebrate with her team. “It’s such a group effort, I’m so humbled by them, without them I couldn’t happen.” The next step for Bianca is working towards representing Australia at the finals in New York.
